Montepulciano

History of Montepulciano

Montepulciano is a widely planted Italian grape, primarily grown in Abruzzo, where it produces Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. Despite its name, it is not related to the town of Montepulciano in Tuscany. This grape is known for its deep color, rich fruit flavors, and food-friendly nature.

Tasting Notes of Montepulciano

Montepulciano wines are full-bodied with flavors of dark cherry, blackberry, and plum. Earthy notes, spice, and hints of chocolate or tobacco often emerge with aging. It has moderate acidity and smooth tannins.

Winemaking Styles of Montepulciano

Most Montepulciano wines are aged in oak barrels to develop structure and complexity. Some producers make youthful, fruit-driven versions, while others create robust, long-aging styles.

Food Pairings with Montepulciano

Montepulciano is a bold, medium-to-full-bodied red wine with dark fruit flavors, earthy spice, and smooth tannins, making it an excellent match for rich, savory dishes such as wild boar ragu, grilled ribeye steak, and simmered tomato dishes. Also try it beside aged cheese.
