About the Burgundy Region

A Brief History of Burgundy Wine

The Burgundy (Bourgogne) wine region in France is one of the world’s most prestigious and historic wine-producing areas. With winemaking roots dating back to Roman times, Burgundy became renowned in the Middle Ages when Cistercian monks meticulously cultivated vineyards. The region's terroir-driven philosophy led to the classification of vineyards based on quality, which still influences Burgundy’s appellation system today. Home to some of the most coveted wines, including those from Grand Cru vineyards, Burgundy continues to be a benchmark for fine wine.

Common Grapes Grown in Burgundy

Burgundy is famous for its two primary grape varieties:

  • Pinot Noir – The backbone of Burgundy’s red wines, Pinot Noir expresses elegance with flavors of red berries, earthy notes, and structured tannins. The finest expressions come from villages like Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, and Pommard.
  • Chardonnay – The signature white grape, producing wines that range from crisp and mineral-driven in Chablis to rich and buttery in Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet.

Other grape varieties include Aligoté, a lesser-known white grape, and Gamay, which is mainly used in Beaujolais.

Winemaking Techniques in Burgundy

Burgundy winemaking focuses on terroir expression. Most winemakers use minimal intervention techniques, including:

  • Whole-cluster fermentation (for added complexity in reds)
  • Neutral oak aging (to preserve purity in whites)
  • Small-batch vinification (to highlight vineyard nuances)

Unlike Bordeaux blends, Burgundy wines are usually single-varietal, allowing the land’s characteristics to shine.

Food Pairings with Burgundy Wines

Burgundy wines pair beautifully with local cuisine, including:

  • Coq au Vin (braised chicken in red wine) – Ideal with Pinot Noir
  • Boeuf Bourguignon (beef stew) – A perfect match for a structured Burgundy red
  • Escargots de Bourgogne (garlic-butter snails) – Pairs wonderfully with crisp Chablis
  • Epoisses Cheese – Complements aged Chardonnay with its creamy texture
  • Burgundy’s wines are a true reflection of terroir, history, and craftsmanship, making them some of the most sought-after bottles worldwide.
